Trevor landed himself a bottle of Macallan 12 Triple Cask and has shipped out samples to everyone. We reviewed the Macallan 12 Double Cask last summer and we're interested in seeing how these compare. Everyone reviewed this by themselves and then revealed their reviews. You can read each separately below. Cheers!
Macallan 12 Triple Cask, 40% ABV, Speyside, $110 CAD, European and American sherry seasoned oak, and ex-bourbon.
Scott's review:
Nose: Shy. Keeps its secrets. Little earthy. Little citrus & vanilla.
Palate: Little oily. Smooth. Hints of malt, tart citrus, vanilla, and oak. Chocolate finish.
Overall: Triple Cask doesn't add anything that the Double Cask already offers. Pleasant but gimmicky. 76.
Simon's review:
Nose: Dusty apple puree in the sample bottle. In the glass it gets a little brighter apples.
Palate: Spicy butterscotch. Dusty/musty note too. Apple puree. Slight sourdough note.
Overall: Nice. Wouldn't buy a bottle at $110, Double Cask is better and $10 less. It's a nice balance, medium body. 73.
Sean's review:
Nose: Apples, sherry casks come through, some ripe fruits.
Palate: Vanilla, oranges, and spices. Kind of creamy mouthfeel on the finish. Spicier than I thought it would be but not overpowering at all.
Overall: 80.
Trevor's review:
Nose: Musty, fermented fruits, honey, lemon, cherry.
Palate: Smooth initially with spicy finish. Most notable flavors are lemon and honey.
Overall: I like a couple of the subtle scents on the nose. Most notably fermented fruits. The taste is not complex. There isn't anything here in particular that would make me reach for it on the shelves or caution someone to stay away from it. 71.
Kyle's review:
Nose: Apples. Lots of apples. Grapefruit. Caramel. Salty.
Palate: Dark chocolate 80% cocoa. Thin. Nutty. Smooth finish. Very easy drinking. Tart finish.
Overall: Nice easy scotch to drink. The nose is not what I get on the palate. Enjoying it. I give it an 81.
Closing out: We average out to 76.2 for this one, compared to 76.3 for the 12 Double Cask. Some of us think the Double Cask is a notch better, some think the Triple Cask is a notch better. Either way they are fairly similar. Value on these is OK, they both land in the mid-70s on our value scale. Either would make great safe gifts for teachers and so on. We've got a couple more Macallans on deck to review this summer so stay tuned!
CHEERS!
