Another new distillery today! Aultmore makes most of their whisky for Dewar's blends but has a handful of single malts they release, similar to Aberfeldy. Looking forward to digging through their offering.
Aultmore 12, 46% ABV, Speyside, refill barrels, $80 CAD.
We sniff around:
APPLES!
Kyle pulls out a white wine aroma. Simon can go for a chardonay but it's really backgrounded to the apple cider/apple puree/green apples.
Sean says apples followed by apples.
Scott had nice tropical/mango coming out of the bottle when he first opened it, but he doesn't get any of that now in the glass. He gets a soapy thing... uh oh.
We cheers.
A lot more going on the palate.
Sean says it almost tastes like there's a hint of peat in there.
Simon goes for baking spices. Apple crumble. Cinnamon. Apple pastries. Almond/amaretto pastries.
Scott points to a nice sourness. Likes the apple pastries strudel note. He gets a little peach too on the finish.
Trevor gets a caramel.
Great mouthfeel at 46%. Doesn't feel diluted. Easy drinking.
Some of us get a pinch of salt.
Kyle gets a spinachy taste. We don't follow but that's interesting.
Reviews: Kyle's pick. This is a decent scotch. The nose was pretty standard plain Speyside but there was more going on for the palate. Nothing he doesn't like about it. Week day kind of scotch, something easy. Not sure if he'd buy a bottle but he gives this a 75. Simon says this is one of better apple forward scotches he's had. It's got a good feel to it, some nice nuances on the palate. If he finds this on sale he might get a bottle. 77. Sean goes 79, he would consider picking this up. Scott usually finds Speysides boring, but this is an outlier. He really likes it, there's a bit more to it. Goes 81. Trevor closes us out with a 76. He's impressed with the palate. We average out to 77.6.
Overall: Not a controversial scotch today. We all agree on the tasting notes, and we all agree the nose is plain but the palate has more going on. Most of us will likely end up with a bottle at some point. It's not something that we're going to seek out, but if we're out at a store and find it for a good price, we'd pick it up. It has a great feel, enough to it that it's not boring, and it's easy drinking for any occasion. It rates 80.8 on our value scale, so even at full price this is a good buy. We recommend you give it a shot.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
