Review number 4 this evening with burgers and friends on a sunny Saturday. It's Christmas in summer out here as we have 25+ bottles laid out on the table for splitting and tasting.
Kilchoman Sanaig, 46% ABV, Peated Islay, $90 CAD, ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry, but leaning more on Sherry.
We sniff around:
Kyle starts us off with sweet and smoky.
Simon smells something rich and thick. Like imagine you have a fog but the fog is jammy.
Everyone likes the foggy jam.
Scott gets a hint of WD-40. Bit of oak. He's on board with the smoky/foggy jam. It's Uigeadail ish.
We cheers.
Simon starts off with salty fruity smoke. It's got a bbq sauce, hickory type note.
Scott pulls grass/hay, a note we have in common with the Machir Bay, maybe a Kilchoman thing. Raisins, sweet smoke, lemon, black pepper, bourbon influence comes through.
Trevor thinks this makes a great bbq-ing drink.
Reviews: Scott's pick. This is one of his favorites. He split a Kilchoman sampler with Simon a few months back and went ahead and bought a bottle. There's a richness and complexity to it that nails it for him. 93. Simon is also a fan, spot on, great flavors, good feel. 86. Trevor is at 86 as well. Great for bbques. Kyle goes 88. He'd definitely get a bottle. We average out to 88.3.
Overall: This a Kilchoman twist on Uigeadail. It's got a similar smoky jammy bbq-y profile, but with some peripheral differences. Some of us prefer Oogie, some Sanaig. Overall Oogie rates 1 point above Sanaig, but Sanaig being significantly cheaper, rates a full 4 points higher on value and takes the silver medal of value, 0.2 points below Lagavulin 8. We definitely recommend you give this a shot when you get a chance.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
