Review number 5 this evening. We've taken our burger break so we're approaching this next set of samples with fresh(ish) tastebuds and full bellies.
Pike Creek 10 Rum Finish. 42% ABV. $40 CAD. Canadian Whisky. Aged in oak for 10 years then finished in rum barrels.
We sniff around:
Smells very rummy. Vanilla. Fake caramel.
Scott gets a little acetone cleaner.
Just based on the nose we're going to guess this was a pretty wet barrel...
Trevor goes for a sweet syrup.
We cheers.
Tastes like it smells.
Simon gets oaky spicy vanilla, little bit of the nailpolishy thing. Nicely rounded, nicely balanced.
Smells like a rum tastes like a rum.
Reviews: Simon's bottle. He likes it, nice balance, very drinkable, would be nice to have a bit more rye influence, but it's very affordable and he would buy another bottle. It's a 75 for him. Scott is confused, he feels like he's drinking a rum, it's very sweet. He would personally mix this, not that it's not good enough to sip, but not what he's looking for. 68. Kyle thinks it's interesting. He's enjoying it but he wouldn't buy it. Matches that 68. Trevor goes 72. Considering the price this makes a better rum than most of the ones in that price range. We average out to 70.8.
Overall: Our only experience with rum casks prior to this was Balvenie 14, where we didn't find any rum influence. And now this with only rum influence. This is a rye but really we rated it as a rum. It makes a plain but well rounded and balanced rum, so if you are looking to switch it up, at this price point, might be something to consider. It works well for both mixing and sipping. Overall though we would not recommend this.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
