#126: Mortlach 16

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Review number 9 this evening as split our round 5 whiskies. Lots of fun reviews coming your way in the next few months, we outdid ourselves.

Mortlach 16, 43% ABV, $170 CAD, Speyside, ex-Sherry.

We sniff around:

Simon starts us off with McIntosh apple.

Scott goes for cinnamon apple.

Kyle gets brown sugar apple.

Trevor goes for burnt apple, like you charred an apple on the bbq.

Nice apple forward nose.

We cheers.

Smooth, apple forward. Apple pie. Multiple apple flavors. Little spicy.

Its a clean crisp apple Scott says. We agree. A little candy sweetness. Little savory. Good mouthfeel.

Reviews: Trevor starts us off. Not a lot going on there. Smooth. Good introduction scotch. It's a 73 for him. Simon says it's got a great feel to it, similar to Aultmore 12 we did recently. Aultmore 12 had a more maritime twist, this has more of an apple pie twist. He rates them both the same 77. Scott is not typically a big fan of just apples, but this does it very well. Mouthfeel is good, and there's a variety of apple flavors going on, so for those reasons he goes 79. Kyle rounds this out with 74. Averages out to 75.8.

Overall: We'd be pretty happy with this bottle if it was $100 CAD or less. It's got a good feel and it's a tasty apple forward scotch, but at current Canadian price, it's a hard pass. It rates well below average on our value adjusted score at 66 points.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
