July 1st coming up, Canada Day out here. It's tainted this year with some municipalities and groups all over the country choosing not to celebrate in light of recent discoveries of mass graves at schools historically purposed to assimilate native children. We at S&P don't think we should ignore the past, but we shouldn't dwell there. Keep our eyes forward and build on our successes. Talk about solutions. It's a fraught issue that people have a hard time talking about constructively, but we at S&P hope and trust we will get there, whether it's a couple decades or a couple generations.
We ponder on this tonight with a glass of Old Pulteney 12. 40% ABV, $75 CAD, ex-bourbon, Highland Single Malt.
We sniff around:
Kyle starts us off with cotton candy.
Simon sees that. Mostly old bruised up apples though.
Trevor gets a fresh salty breeze. Smooth approachable nose.
Scott gets generic berries.
We cheers.
A lot more going on for the palate.
Kyle gets some dark chocolate.
Trevor gets the berries on the palate.
Scott goes for a fruit punch. Almost cherry. Very sweet. Good mouth feel.
Simon calls out salty apples, like you let some apples marinate in a briny solution for a while. It's a little matly. The apples are a lot harder to find, more balanced with the other flavors.
Sean points to the mild spice. Some butterscotch.
Reviews: Scott's pick. He really likes this. Wasn't expecting much but it turns out to have well rounded flavors, smooth, good mouthfeel, fruity. He goes 84. Simon also likes it. It's a solid notch up from the plain ole Speysides. Medium mellow rounded balanced flavors. Not a one trick pony. Might get a bottle. 75. Kyle has this at 75 as well. It's a bit better than the typical apple centered scotch. Trevor says the nose wasn't exciting but was doing a couple things well. The palate was more complex. Pretty smooth. Doesn't knock him off the cliff but he's happy to put it at 79. Sean closes it with 77. It's a good scotch. Little above average. Averages out to 78.
Overall: This is a good value scotch. It's not going to blow your socks off but if you were heading to the liquor store looking to pick up a Glenfiddich or a Glenlivet, we recommend you switch it up and give Old Pulteney 12 a shot.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
