We get to sample a bottle today that Kyle got for his weeding a few years back. This is a French blended whisky that highlights a year imprinted on the French mind for a couple centuries now, 1789, and the event that lit the spark.
Bastille 1789, 40% ABV, French blended whisky, aged in French limousine oak, no age statement. $45 CAD.
We sniff around:
Trevor pulls apples mostly, and a bit of caramel, maybe lemon?
We all agree on apples. Simon says bright golden apples. Light and sweet.
Scott thinks there's a little something more. Frosting? Powdered sugar?
We cheers.
Trevor gets a charcoal, it's not as sweet as he expected. Little caramel.
Kyle says it's like when you deep fry your potatoes a little too long. Very light. No apple no honey no lemon, nothing like the nose.
Simon still gets the apples coming through. Little musty note.
Scott is sticking to his glaze sweetness. It's light and thin but not unpleasant. He says if you're in the mood for a cold crisp light beer, this is the whisky version of that.
It's light and smooth, not a ton more to it. It's interesting. It's nice for what it is. This bottle has been sitting for a few years. It definitely wasn't this nice when we first cracked it, so likely this one needs air.
Reviews: Trevor starts us off. Not a ton on the nose, not a ton on the palate, but there's a nice transition, it's nice to drink, light and refreshing. 77 for him. Kyle pins it at 75. Probably wouldn't buy it but definitely enjoys it and wouldn't refuse it. Simon says it's mildly pleasant. Light and sweet. 68. Scott goes 71. In general it's too light and simple but he'd reach for it on a hot day when you want something light and crisp, it fits in the niche category of refreshing whiskies.
Overall: Don't expect a ton out of this. It's light, it's simple, easy drinking. That said we enjoyed it and like Scott said, on a hot day, at the beach, there's some settings where we'd reach for this. Not sure that anyone will go out and purchase a bottle but it's not bad.
Cheers!
