#136: Legent

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Moving on to number 3 this evening. Bourbons have so far done well with us, although we have a much harder time differentiating them from one another. One might be a little spicier, one is higher proof, one has a bit more cherry, one a bit more vanilla, but overall they ressemble eachother much more than scotches do in our experience. That said we've liked them all so far. We've got three bourbons to review tonight. Legent is finished in sherry casks so it's not a bourbon proper but it practically is.

Legent Bourbon. 47% ABV. Portion of the casks used for blending are red wine and sherry finished. $60 CAD. Jim Beam recipe but blended by Suntory.

We sniff around:

Simon gets a big cinnamon.

Kyle gets banana.

Sean goes for corn. Scott says ''yea, corn on the cob.'' Sean does get the sherry influence in there.

Potent nose.

We cheers.

Cinnamon still.

Simon points to the nice mouthfeel and fizziness. Little vanilla nailpolish note behind the classic bourbon notes.

Scott gets a hay/dry grass note. Corn. Cherry.

Big oak on the front.

Review: Trevor starts us off. There's basic bourbon things going on, but then you throw in some wine notes, some complexity. He goes 85 on this, beautiful. Scott matches that 85. Strong bourbonny flavors, ''mixed with the artistry of Japanese blending''... Doesn't burn much for 47%. You get what you expect from a bourbon, but it's done well. Sean likes the sherry influence. Cinnamon, oakiness. Easy drinking. It all lines up nicely. 81. Kyle goes 86. Simon is not as impressed. It's a fine bourbon but there's couple slight off notes. Didn't get any of the wine/sherry influence or the Japanese blending influence that he was looking for. 73. Averages out to 82.

Overall: Some of us recommend this. Either way we all agree the bottle looks very cool. Don't make too much of the wine and sherry cask or the Japanese blending, but expect a fine, well balanced bourbon, at a good proof. It lands very high on our value scale at number 6.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
