#137: Rittenhouse Rye

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Review number 4 this evening, the first time in two years that the crew has all 5 members sitting together in person. Lots to celebrate. u/themanfrommars1991 made some comments about Rittenhouse on Simon's Michter's tasting review, so he went ahead and bought a bottle to try it out.

Rittenhouse Rye. From Heaven Hill distillery in Kentucky. Bottled in Bond so 50% ABV and at least 4 years old. $50 CAD.

We sniff around:

Scott gets a milk chocolate note. Cinnamon on top of a vanilla cake.

Simon goes for a cinnamon flavored pine. Everyone agrees with cinnamon but pine is harder to get.

Trevor gets a corny aroma.

We cheers.

Beautiful mouthfeel Simon says. Cinnamon punch. Nutmeggy.

Scott gets brown sugar.

Kyle goes for straight butter.

It's not very rye-y. Most of us would guess it's a bourbon if given blind.

Sean goes for cinnamon raisin bread without the raisin.

Oak. Scott finds a Dr. Peppery note. It's got a strong spice to it.

Reivews: Simon starts us off. This comes together very nicely. He would buy it again. This is an 80 for him. Trevor says it's fun, it's dynamic, lots to dig into. He goes 84. Kyle lands on 80, there's some things he really likes, and some things that are a little harsh, but overall very enjoyable. Sean goes 82. Nice flavors, enjoyable. Little sweetness he can't pinpoint. Scott rounds it up with 78. He would've thought this was a bourbon, a little too hot but everything else is solid. Averages out to 80.8.

Overall: Big value on this one and not much controversy among the group. It jumps up to number 4 out of 98 on our value scale, between Kilchoman Sanaig and Ardbeg Wee Beastie. This is tasty, it's balanced, it's fun. Not quite your typical rye, they call it Pennsylvania style rye on the bottle, but for the price we definitely recommend you give it a shot.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
