#143: Clynelish 14

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Another new distillery! This one has been on our hitlist for a long time being a Diageo classic. We still have a few more classics to go but it's always fun seeing the list dwindle down.

Clynelish 14: 46% ABV. $100 CAD. Highland Region. 14 years old. Slightly peated.

We sniff around:

Simon says it smells very rich. There's apples but there's a bunch of other fruits too. Maybe a little butterscotch.

Trevor gets fresh air and sea salt.

Scott is mostly in the sweet fruits, berries. Ripe fruits. Smells like it's going to be sticky sweet and deserty.

Kyle goes for caramel, white wine, cherry, hint of coffee beans and banana.

Sean gets some honey, floral. He's the only one that picks up on the hint of peat.

We cheers.

Nice proof on this. Good feel to it.

Simon says it's got some liveliness to it. Butterscotchy, ripe berries, figgy dried fruit finish.

Trevor gets an enjoyable spice. There's something slightly burnt he likes.

Scott says its a copy paste from the nose. There's a tart/sour note he really enjoys. Combines nicely with the sweetness and richness of the ripe fruits. Lively.

Simon pins this between Oban Little Bay which has the same flavors but more mellow, and Arran Bodega, which has the same flavors but dialed up in potency.

Kyle get some grape notes, some caramel. Slight dark chocolate. Extremely nice mouthfeel. Cherry is still there. Quick finish. Little syruppy. Reminds him of Glendronach 12 and Amrut Fusion.

Sean again the only one that picks up on the peat. Little salt. Honey. Apples. Cereal. Finish is short and sweet.

Reviews: Trevor goes 77. There's things he likes about this, it's honest and well put together. Nice youthful feel. Nothing blows him away but it's good. For Simon this reminds him of Achentoshan Three Wood but better put together and balanced. This comes in at 84 for him. Likely will end up on his shelf at some point. Scott pins it at 81. He's likely going to pick it up at some point. Kyle would consider picking this up. It's smooth, little tart he likes. 80. Sean says the salt and peat are nicely balanced by the honey and sweetness. Big hit for him, 86. Averages out to 81.6.

Overall: This does well with the crew. We can't find any details on the barrels used, but as you can tell from our comparisons it's got a solid sherry influence. In terms of peat, no one really picked up on it except Sean. The peat doesn't really come through as a flavor, more as a feel. Either way, this is well done, it feels great, and you should give it a shot.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
