#145 & 146: Maker's Mark Original & 46

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

It's a sunny Saturday today and we're celebrating Kyle's daughter's first birthday! The S&P team has been growing this last couple years, and there's a handful more humans in gestation. Amidst the cake smashing, blowing bubbles, and turning sprinkler systems into splash pads, the crew found some time to sneak away and do a little Maker's Mark side by side for our fans.

Maker's Mark (referred to as OG): 45% ABV. $44 CAD. Kentucky Wheated Bourbon.

Maker's Mark 46 (referred to as 46): 47% ABV. $57 CAD. Kentucky Wheated Bourbon. They add 10 French Oak staves to a regular Maker's Mark barrel for an undisclosed time.

We sniff around:

Simon says the 46 has more cherry whereas OG is more oaky. He likes the 46 nose a tad more.

Kyle agrees, the 46 is sweeter.

Scott gets cinnamon in both of them.

Trevor says the OG smells like a regular bourbon, the 46 is sweeter. He gets a little honey on the OG.

We cheers.

OG is warm and spicy.

The 46 has a better feel to it, more balance Simon says.

Kyle still says the 46 is sweeter and smoother. Both Maker's aren't as spicy as other bourbons we've had.

Scott says the OG is a little bland. Almost hollow. The 46 is more full.

Simon says he gets the cherry note in the 46 that's hard to find in the OG.

Reviews: Simon starts us off. 70 for the OG and 78 for the 46. Trevor's got 71 for the OG and 76 for the 46. Kyle's putting 65 on the OG and 75 for the 46. Scott's going 64 for the OG and 72 for the 46. Averages out to 67.5 for the OG and 75.3 for the 46.

Overall: The 46 is certainly worth the additional investment. We didn't find anything wrong with the OG Maker's Mark but it is a pretty basic bourbon and didn't have the best feel to it. That said, the crew is not going to stock either of these regularly. The other bourbons we've had have rated better around the same price point.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
