#147: Tè Bheag

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

A budget blend today for the crew. We're hoping for a killer value scotch here. Pronounced Che Vek.

Tè Bheag: $40 CAD. 40% ABV. Gaelic Scotch Blend coming mostly from sherry casks.

We sniff around:

Kyle says he smells like tequila on the ground the day after a party.

Trevor agrees, it smells like bad tequila at 2am.

Simon goes for old underwear with maple syrup drizzled on it. A smoked herring in a fish market.

Scott gets a solid sulphur note. He has a hard time getting past that. Maybe some caramel in the background. Smells like hard water, or well water.

Simon agrees, it's like fishy water with caramel drizzled in.

We cheers.

Kyle says it's not very good. Take a Talisker and water it down a lot.

Simon says it's smoky, fishy, little heat. It's kind of the flat beer version of scotch. It does have a lot going on flavor wise. Some sweetness to it too.

Trevor says the nose gets better but still not very good.

Reviews: Simon had high hopes for this as a killer value scotch. It does have a lot going on and some flavors that he likes but it doesn't come together nicely. He won't pick it up again. 66. Trevor does not like anything about it. The nose has a tequila that makes him want to vomit. The taste is not enjoyable. Very short (thankfully). 49 drain pour for him. Kyle goes 59. Not great. Scott matches that 59. It's flat and smells rotten. It feigns complexity but it's boring. He would avoid this. Averages out to 58.3.

Overall: We got tea bagged. The crew does not recommend this one. It has the merit of raking in only our second drain pour rating, after Kyle's anCnoc 12 rant a while back.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
