#156: Singleton of Dufftown 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Another classic we're crossing off the list today and a new distillery!

Singleton of Dufftown 12: 40% ABV, $57 CAD, Speyside single malt, European and American Oak barrels.

We sniff around:

Simon starts us off with malty apples. Malt candy almost. There's a candy-esque aroma.

Sean agrees, grainy.

Scott gets nailpolishy note. Little raspberry note, some kind of red fruit anyway.

Kyle gets deep fried bananas, the ones you get at sushi. You can shove your nose right in.

Trevor finds it smells sterile and earthy/dirty.

We cheers.

Sean starts off with oranges. Feels a little watery. Some spices. Little oaky.

Scott disagrees, he thinks it's oily. Agrees with the citrus note. Little raspberry. Little black pepper.

Simon gets that tart-y note that you could call raspberry. Little apple note. Little butterscotch. That malt candy still comes through.

Good balance. It comes together pretty well.

Kyle gets a bitter note on the finish.

Trevor finds it tastes like bitter caugh syrup, lemon lozenger.

Reviews: Simon's pick. It's got a nice balance, good range of flavors, some pepper, some malt candy. Comes together suprisingly well for a 40%. 75. Kyle says it's nice and enjoyable, not going to run out and get it but still, 75. Scott thinks this is a really good Speyside. This isn't boring. Oranges, different fruits, malty, wood shines through, decent mouthfeel. He goes 78. Sean lands on 73. Solid scotch, good price point, easy drinking. Would recommend for someone new to scotch. Trevor is the odd one out tonight. The nose was interesting, but the taste was pretty offputting. The bitterness overpowered it for him and he's not a throat candy kind of guy. He lands at 59. Averages out to 72.

Overall: This is kind of the Bowmore 12 of Speyside. It's got a solid balance, drinkable, tasty. Trevor excepted, we would recommend this as part of a starter package. Good value on this one. Nothing we're super excited about running to the store and getting a bottle, but it may very well end up on our shelves at some point.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
