#157: Aberlour A'bunadh B66

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Our second Aberlour we get to review after the 12-year back in early 2020. This one has similar flavors, but it's dialed up and feels very different. The format on this one is a little messy since we reviewed it separately. Scott & Simon together, Kyle & Trevor, and then Sean on his own.

Aberlour A'bunadh: NAS, 58% ABV, $100 CAD, Speyside Single Malt, aged in Oloroso Sherry casks.

Simon & Scott:

Nose:

Scott says its rich.

Simon agrees, wine-y, rich, all sorts of ripe berries. Oily look to it. Orchard-y.

Scott says yea, picture you were walking in the middle of apple and orange trees.

Thick syrup. Really sweet and rich.

Scott says strawberry ice cream. Simon agrees, with caramel on top.

We cheers.

Scott: Ooh, interesting mouthfeel. Lively. Evaporates but also syruppy. Lots of vapors.

Simon: This feels like it's got some old richness to it, but with a younger, lively feel. The youth and the age portions of this scotch come through.

Scott: This isn't sour, but it feels like a Warhead. Little tart/bitter. This is easily his favorite Speyside to date.

Reviews: Scott's got an 88 on this. Simon's at 89. This is going to be a restock for him once he runs out. That richness, sweet, lively... The closest one to this is the Arran Bodega, but this has got a few points on it.

Trevor and Kyle agree with the above. Trevor adds that it's chewy, and has a candied berry flavor. He puts this at 85. Kyle says it's go some heat, some caramel. It's oily. 84 for him.

Sean smells a lot of sherry notes, ginger, orange, vanilla, and banana spice cake. The palate has lots of spice/heat. You can tell it's cask strength. Orange, malty, hint of dark chocolate and pepper. He agrees on the fizzy/evaporating feeling. He finds a little oaky note on the finish. Lots of sherry notes. He's at 82.

Overall: We average out to 85.6 on this one. This rates one point more than a similar scotch we rated recently Arran Bodega. Both are big and bold sherry bombs, and we recommend that you try them both.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
