Number 3 of the Whisky Explorations Tasting Part 1 hosted by Craft Cellars and the most expensive bottle I've ever sampled. By far.
Mortlach 1992 - 26 year: 53% ABV, $2,980 CAD, Speyside Single Malt, aged in first fill Oloroso and PX casks.
Sniffing her:
Smells like thick sherry syrup, figs and dates. There's a little pipe tobacco backgrounded too.
Cheers:
Super rich. Warm. Thick sherry leather. Little spicy. Lots of port notes, tastes more like a port cask than sherry. Tawny port. Little apples. There's a kind of black tea note in there too, almost like you added sherry syrup to a cup of pekoe. There's a pipe tobacco dryness on the finish there. Lots of oak and port-y notes on the finish.
Overall/Review: This reminds me a lot of Kavalan Port Cask, but to be honest, having them back to back, I love the Kavalan a little bit more. The Kavalan is more leathery, not as port forward. There's a really nice herbal note on the Kavalan too that stands out. Anyway, stamping a 93 here. This would 100% be worth stocking if I was a millionaire.
Cheers!
