#164-168: Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar 2nd Edition #16-20

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Good day everyone, Simon here with the 4th installment of this advent calendar review. This calendar has lasted for just about a year now of getting together with my neighbor for a scotch and a ponder to share these 50 mL samples. Not quite the way it's intended to function but it's been great. I'm doing these all blind.

#16: Benriach 19 1996, Samaroli, American Oak, Speyside, 43% ABV.

Nose: Milk chocolate, butterscotch.

Palate: Citrus, salty, caramel, chocolate, all very well balanced.

Overall: Tasty. It's not bold but I like how it comes together. 86.

#17: Craigellachie 6 2008, AD Rattray, Sherry Cask, 58% ABV.

Nose: Butterscotch apples. Some kind of lemon desert. Slight salt.

Palate: Strong fizzy spice, cinnamon, loads of butterscotch, a little malty barley note, liquorish, little marzipan note.

Overall: This has really nice feel to it and full flavors. Not a ton of layers but tasty stuff. 84. I've enjoyed both Craigellachies in this calendar so far.

#18: 1993 Auchroisk 22, AD Rattray, Bourbon Casks, Speyside Single Malt, 52% ABV.

Nose: Pear, apples, malty, hay.

Palate: Same. Black pepper. Little honey.

Overall: This is good but it's 22 years old? My neighbor and I were both guessing in the 8-12 range. It's nice but very simple. Doesn't drink like 52% that's for sure. I've got a 73 on this one.

#19: 1995 Miltonduff 20, Samaroli, Oak casks, Speyside 45% ABV.

Didn't take a ton of notes on this one, but it was all apple pie, rich, and a little salty. Reminded me a lot of Aultmore 12, which I've got a bottle of here. This was marginally better than the Aultmore, so I'm stamping an 81 on it. Was not expecting 20 years here.

#20: Aromatic Orange Tobacco, 1988 Glenrothes 25, Sherry Butt, Speyside, 46% ABV.

Nose: Rich, sherried, mineral.

Palate: Fruity butterscotch. Minerally. Creamy. Nice layers. Salty. Orange liqueur.

Guessing 20 years old, 46% ABV, definitely sherried, stab in the dark I'll say it's an Arran.

Overall: Not a terrible guess. Another delicious Glenrothes in this calendar. Wemyss Malts does not fail to impress. I'm stamping a 90 on this, it's delicious, lots of layers, complexity, tasty notes that all compliment eachother nicely. I see prices around $350 CAD for this. If I could, I would.
