Kyle gambled on this bottle and shared samples with the crew. Let's see if the gamble paid off!
Tomintoul 10: 40% ABV, $75 CAD, Speyside single malt, ex-bourbon casks.
We sniff around:
Obviously the apples are there. Kyle goes for red delicious. Trevor thinks more of an apple dressing. Apple sauce Scott says. Rich apples. Simon gets more an unripe apple.
Trevor adds brown sugar. He gets these apple pie filling aromas.
Maybe some syrup? Aunt Jemima.
Simon adds fresh fennel, little malty.
Sean gets some citrusy aromas. Lemon, orange zest.
We cheers.
Thin, light, and sweet Scott says.
Kyle gets a bitter/tart note. Sean too.
The apples are harder to find on the palate.
Scott calls it sugary. It's not bad at all, might be boring, but not bad. Very smooth.
Sean gets some bready and malty notes, but it's out of balance and off note. Slighty nutty and caramel notes on the finish.
Trevor says it's kind of a flatline for him. Does the same thing from start to finish. Pretty linear.
Simon gets a little apple. A little butterscotch. It's syruppy.
Near the end of the review Trevor gets a little cinnamon burn.
Reviews: Kyle says it's quick, one and done, but it's good. He wouldn't pick this up. Lands at 70. Trevor likes nose, but the palate fell a little flat for him. Too boring for him, but an easy sipper still. 72 for him. Scott pins this at 74. Standard Speyside nose, palate threw a little curveball but still it doesn't do a lot. It's boring but it's good. He'd take it if offered. Smooth, sweet, and good. Sean is not impressed. The palate is unique, but not in a good way. Tastes off. 50 flat for him, his lowest rating so far. Simon agrees with the others. This is just fine. Not something he would want on his shelf. He pins this at 68. Averages out to 66.8.
Overall: Feel free to skip this one. Nothing particularly exciting and it's not likely to ever hit our shelves. The gamble didn't turn out but at least we can cross another one off our list!
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
