The crew is reading The Creature from Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin. We started this book club as part of our ponders back in February and we're trending to go through everyone's picks by the 1-year! Well done crew. The book digs through the unsavory aspects and the track record of fiat currencies and more generally governments meddling with economics. Spoiler alert, Griffin has nothing good to say about it. So far the crew is enjoying it, but it's longest book we've tackled. In the meantime, enjoy our second Bunnahabhain review!
Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair: $66 CAD, 46% ABV, non-peated Islay single malt, aged in sherry casks. No age statement.
We sniff around:
Scott gets a moldy mildewy rotten fruit smell. Overripe banana. Red twizzlers.
Simon agrees, wants to call that fruit an apple. Almost smells a little peated, despite being non-peated. Moldy/mossy. Gets a malty note.
Kyle says you can shove your nose right in. An approachable nose.
Sean pulls the sherry notes. Took a few minutes for that to come out but we all get it out now.
Trevors goes for some black licorice, brown sugar, vanilla, and cherry.
We cheers.
Simon says this has a good kick. He gets the apples, but also the sherry profile, the moldy malty note. Still surprised it's not peated. Tastes like it's lightly peated.
Kyle gets a salty note. Warming, feels nice. He complains about the lack of a finish.
Scott gets that as well, but there's a sourness to it. Otherwise it's similar to the nose.
Trevor gets a nutty, chocolate cake note.
Reviews: Sean's pick. He gives this a 74. Pretty average, well balanced scotch. Can't go wrong with the sherry style scotches in his opinion. Scott's at 78 on this. He thinks its pretty good, smooth, interesting flavors, average good scotch for him. Kyle goes 72. Simon is at 78, it has a few facets, the coastal, the moldy apple, the sherry. It may end up on his shelf, good price on this. Trevor wraps it up today with a 72. The nose was complex but it felt weak and subtle. Not gonna be on his shelf but he would accept a drink of it anytime. Averages out to 74.8.
Overall: This does well on value. It's all around good. It doesn't like most of us will stock it. In the sub-$70 range there's not much that beats it though. I see Bowmore 12, Glen Garioch Founder's Reserve, and Dun Bheagan Islay Small Batch that are clear winners in that category. Otherwise Deanston Virgin Oak, Bowmore No. 1, and Amrut Single Malt have an edge. You could do a lot worse than picking this up.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
