#179: BenRiach Peated Cask Strength Batch 1

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

We welcome a new life this ponder! A brand new Van Schyndel boy to us is born; Henry. Congrats Scott, we wish you lots of fun raising your boy and hopefully a new Scotch & Ponder mate a couple decades from now!

BenRiach Peated Cask Strength Batch 1: 56% ABV, $110 CAD, aged in ex-Oloroso and ex-Bourbon casks, peated Speyside.

We sniff around:

Sean starts us off with peat, honey, a little sherry, and caramel.

Scott gets a briny-ness. Almost a pickled. Extinguished fire. Mustiness, damp forest mildewy note. Dew soaked wood.

Simon gets that sweetness, not sure he can call it honey.

Scott likes the ''campfire roasted apple'' note from the bottle description. We're not sure about the elaborate details on there to be honest.

Trevor says it started off peaty, but now it's more smoky.

We cheers.

Scott says it's a busy scotch. Lot going on.

Party in your mouth Trevor says.

Sweet apple comes through on the palate.

Kyle says it tastes like baked apple chips.

Peat is more on the finish for Trevor. Campfire. Caramel he gets too.

Interesting mouthfeel, almost like it's carbonated. Like it went through the Soda Stream.

Simon agrees with everything. It's a little salty too. Pretty punchy.

Reviews: Simon's pick. This is his type of scotch, the young bourbon refill peated ones. Within that category though it kind of falls to the bottom. He goes 79. This is good but the other similar options that are similarly priced are way better: Port Charlotte 10, Ardbeg An Oa, Lagavulin 8, etc. Kyle lands on 80. It was busy at first but tames itself. He liked those fireworks even if they didn't last. The nose and palate are the same. Nothing wrong with this he likes it. Might pick it up. Trevor's in the same boat. It's got that peatiness he likes. Pretty interesting at first, kind of disapointing that it peters off. For a cask strength it's suprisingly easy drinking. He gives it an 86. Sean goes 79, doesn't stand out enough to go into the 80s. A bit above average he'd say. Scott pins this at 83. He really enjoys this, lots of fun things going on. This has notes of Islay with a Speyside background. Averages out to 81.4.

Overall: This is a pretty good scotch. Some of us may be looking for a bottle. If we're comparing to Ardbeg An Oa or Caol Ila 12 though and other similar type/price bourbon refill young peated scotch, this isn't the first place we'd point anyone to.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
