#186: Alberta Premium Cask Strength Batch 2

Another review from our Christmas get together to split our round 6 whiskies. The highest proof whisky we've reviewed so far! Edges out the 131 proof Glenrothes we tried a while ago.

Alberta Premium Cask Strength Batch 2: 66% ABV, $70 CAD, 100% Rye. No age statement but reportedly 5-6 years old.

We sniff around:

Kyle doesn't get that much on the nose. Especially for 66%. You can smell it's a rye.

Simon gets a little vanilla, a little herbal. He complains it's not very aromatic.

Trevor pulls a cherry note. Like a candy cherry. Sweet pipe tobacco note.

Scott gets a corn note.

Kyle is getting whiffs of dirty socks. Apple cinnamon.

It's opened up now Simon says. Fennel, cinnamon. Some nice rye notes.

We cheers.

Wow, says Kyle. Starts sweet, and then flavors shoot up.

Simon says the finish is stellar to him. It has a Blue Curacao finish which is very unique.

Scott gets a sweet and sour note and then it gets very warm as you swallow. Not in a painful way, nice feel. He gets some bourbon-y notes, cinnamon, corn.

Kyle gets a sweet syrup.

Simon goes for fresh fennel, with that little sweetness it has. The flavors blow up as you swallow. Lots of herbally notes.

Reviews: Simon's a fan. He'll probably replace this bottle when he runs out. He likes the feel, he likes the flavors, he likes the uniqueness. He's at 87. Kyle is on board with that. Unique, decent price. Loves that storm in your mouth. He puts this at 90. Trevor is on board. He likes that tobacco note on the nose. The sweetness. It's an experience drinking this. 88 for him. Scott pins this at 77. It's good. He was expecting a total mess at 66%, so this is impressive in that sense. Other than the fact it's very smooth for 66%, he finds it fairly plain. Averages out to 85.5.

Overall: This shoots up to number 4 on our value scale. It'll likely drop a few spots on the more recent batches as prices are going up quick on this. This is tasty and impressive. If the proof doesn't scare you we recommend you give this a shot.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
