#194: Glenfarclas 21

Wrapping up Glenfarclas for a while at least with this 21 year old. We thought the 12 year was a good base, the 105 wasn't the cask strength we were hoping it would be, and the 15 was a good build on the 12 and may end up on some of our shelves. Let's see what the 21 has got!

Glenfarclas 21: 43% abv, $180 CAD. Speyside, aged in sherry casks.

We sniff around:

Scott starts us off with apple forward. Sweet apple.

Candied apples Simon says, the one with the red candy shell. Some sherry notes. Little malty.

Kyle points out the oily appearence.

Sean says red licorice, wine gums, caramel, honey, and malty.

Scott pulls some Werthers. Grape notes as well, mixture between actual red grapes and grape flavoring which has little to do with grapes. Little bitter note on the back end. Molasses too maybe, some kind of thicker note.

We cheers.

Some sour notes Scott says.

Kyle gets cereal notes right out of the gate.

Sour bitter apple Simon says. Tastes like the apple is almost ripe but not quite. Like you picked it a little early. Little bit of butterscotch.

Feels thin Scott says. There's a warmth there.

Sean's getting some honey, malt, wood spice, pepper and ginger. Minty dry finish.

Trevor's pulling some red licorice.

It doesn't taste very old.

Reviews: This is enjoyable Trevor says. The nose had more going on. He likes the tart apple, the liquorish, but not anything he'd run to grab. 75 for him. Scott is going 72. He's a little disapointed by it. Not a standout. Tastes a little watered down. He likes the 15 and maybe even the 12 better. Kyle is going 64. He's expecting something much more full bodied for a 21 year old. Very basic. Simon's landing on 77, the nose gives a couple points, it's a nose worthy of high 80s, but the palate is just weak and plain. Sean rounds it up with 77. Averages out to 73.

Overall: You can streer clear of this one to be honest. The 15 is much more interesting and tasty. We've still got the 17 and 25 to try but it'll probably be a while before we get Farcled up again.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
