Hey everyone, Simon here. Got a chance to try a quartet of bourbons from 1792 (the brand). Here are my thoughts below:
1792 Small Batch: 46.8% abv. $50 CAD. Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
Sniffing her:
There's a distinctive nuttiness there, like hazelnuts. Cinnamon. Corny.
Cheers!
Hazelnuts again. Cinnamon. Corny. Super easy drinking. Peanutty. It feels pretty sexy. There's like a herbal liqueur-ness to this that's really nice. This isn't your harsh bourbon, there's something that tastes more sophisticated about this, and elegant, which I've never said about bourbon.
Overall/Review: I would definitely get a bottle of this. Will keep an eye out, it's not that hard to find but also not always available. 83.
1792 Single Barrel: 49.3% abv, $60 CAD. Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
Sniffing her:
Very similar nose to small batch. Something distinguished about this. Lots of nutty notes, peanuts or hazelnuts. Amaretto.
Cheers!
Syruppy. Amaretto type of nuttiness. Cinnamon. Silky. Oak.
Overall/Review: Delicious. Similar to the small batch but a little punchier and oakier. 84. Again an easy buy at MSRP.
1792 Bottled-in-Bond: 50% abv, $60 CAD. Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
Sniffing her:
Same as the other two maybe a bit richer/dustier, and a bit more baking spices. Same noteworthy nuttiness that borders on hazelnut, still has a sophisticated liqueurishness to it.
Cheers!
Not as nutty, very sweet. I want to say there's a herbal licorice note there. Corny, baking spices. Oak. Elegant.
Overall/Review: same comments as the Single Barrel. 84.
1792 Full Proof: 62.5% abv, $100 CAD. Kentucky Bourbon.
Sniffing her:
Bag of assorted nuts baked with cinnamon and maple syrup. Still that little hazelnutty note. Still pretty silky and sophisticated. Just on the nose you would never know this is higher ABV than the others.
Cheers!
The ABV is on the palate though. It's pretty hot. Other than the higher proof it's the same, silky nuts and cinnamon. Honey drizzled buttered biscuits. This has a little pickle-y-ness to it. Very mild, like they added a couple drop of pickle juice in there.
Overall/Review: I like this but my hot take is that 1792 drinks nicer at lower proof. 81.
Overoverall: I would buy any of the lower proof bottles, but not all three. I would be hard pressed to pick out the Small Batch from the Bottled-in-Bond and the Single Barrel in a blind challenge. The Full Proof is an easy standout just based on ABV but otherwise very similar flavors. What I like the most about 1792 is that it has a elegant/fanciness to it that bourbons don't typically have. Bourbons are usually brash and boistourous. This is a sophisticated, suit wearing bourbon. Luckily the Small Batch isn't that hard to find so it's likely you'll see it on my shelf soon.
Cheers!
Simon from S&P
