#203: Lagavulin 11 Offerman 2nd Edition

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

The crew has been looking forward to this review. Lagavulin's been a hit, the 8 is our highest value scotch for over a year now and the 12 our highest rated. Lagavulin in Guiness casks sounds pretty tasty. So let's dig in!

Lagavulin 11 Offerman 2nd Edition: 46$ abv, $130 CAD, Islay Single Malt, finished in Guiness stout casks.

We're sniffing:

Loads of peat. You can smell it across the room.

Kyle adds salt and lemons. Grassy.

Simon says this smells more like the Lagavulin 16 than the 8 or 12. He says there's a roasty richness, maybe chocolate-y note that he would attribute to the stout cask. He doesn't think he'd pick it out blind though, it's very backgrounded.

Kyle and Sean don't get those notes.

After a couple minutes those notes come through a bit more but you still have to dig for it.

Once it opens up 5 minutes later it's starting to smell more like the 8/12. Olive juice, lemon-y flavors.

Scott gets a raunchy cigar, fermented apple aroma. Cigar ash.

Trevor gets the cigar ash. He gets lemongrass too.

Funny how we started thinking this was closer to the 16 year, but now we're thinking closer to the 8 year.

We cheers.

Nice feel Kyle says. Bitter dark chocolate note comes through, 90% cocoa.

Sean gets the lemons. Pepper.

Scott says this one kind of disapears on him. Not a ton on the finish.

Simon goes for Liquid smoke. Salty. Same as the nose there's a little roastiness there that you could attribute to the cask. Again he'd have a hard time picking it out blind. Ashy finish that sticks around.

Reviews: Trevor starts us off. The nose is interesting. He likes how it developed, and the lemongrass notes. Palate was good. He likes it. 86. Kyle goes 83. He's kind of disapointed. He was expecting something different with the Guiness casks. Seems gimmicky. Nice feel to it. Finish is a little to quick. He wouldn't seek it out, Lag 8 is better. Simon goes 86 too. Lagavulin can do no wrong but this is indeed pretty gimmicky. The slight roasty notes that may be there are way too subtle and don't necessarily do anything great. He wouldn't get it over the core range. Sean goes 86 too. Agrees with the gimmicky comments. He would prefer the 16 or the 8 over this. Scott ends the review with 74. Pretty unimpressed, especially for Lagavulin. It's just good. We average out to 83.

Overall: We're not exactly sure how this landed whisky of the year. Every one of us would rather any of their core range (8, 12, 16, DE) over this. It's not bad by any means but not anything we'll seek out, and if you missed out on this one, don't feel bad about it.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
