#235: Laphroaig 10 Sherry Oak

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

It's a nice day out here in Southern Ontario, a few crew members are in their backyards lighting up cigars as the sun sets and we get ready to review yet another Laphroaig.

Laphroaig 10 Sherry Oak, 10 years old, 48% abv, $100 CAD, Islay single malt, aged in sherry casks.

Sniffing around:

Scott starts us off with maple bacon.

Simon agrees but also has the smoky raunchy aromas too. Scott gets the sea salt/seaweed but not the raunchy. He gets strawberries too.

Trevor gets the peat sherry combo. Really dark color.

Liquid smoke, bbq sauce Simon adds.

Trevor agrees, smells like Diana's Original. He gets a hint of plum sauce too.

We cheers.

Trevor starts us off with liquid smoke.

Scott gets a nice warmth and spice. Sea salt, seaweed flavors are still there. Not sure that he would guess Laphroaig blind. Simon agrees, the raunchy flavors are missing.

Simon gets strawberries with the liquid smoke. The candy strawberries. The body isn't bad but would like it livelier or thicker. No complaint at the flavor level though. Scott disagrees on the body.

Sean points out that the sherry pops more after a couple sips.

Reviews: Scott's pick so he starts us off. He's got a 90 on this. This is a fantastatic scotch. Loves the bacon notes, the bbq notes, the strawberry notes. From nose to palate this is fantastic. Trevor is going 89. Nose is interesting, liquid smoke strawberries, great bbq-ing scotch. Pairs very well with a cigar. Smooth. Agrees with Simon's comments on the body though. Simon is going 85 here. Definitely an improvement on the Triple Wood so he's happy they're making the switch. Has a couple things to complain about but overall very well done and flavorful and would not mind having it on his shelf. Kyle pins it at 88. Sean is our sandbagger of the day with an 82. Averages out to 86.8.

Overall: Another good showing from Laphroaig. This rates much better than Triple Wood which averaged 78.8 points, so if this is a core range change from Laphroaig we are very happy about it. Everyone on the line would like a bottle and a few of us will seek it out if it makes its way back to Ontario. Overall, we recommend you give this one a shot.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
