It's starting to get chilly out here in Southern Ontario. We're at the sweetspot where we don't need to run the furnace or the AC. We celebrate this tonight with a Glenkinchie! The standard 12 year old impressed us so we made it a point to find the Distiller's Edition.
Glenkinchie Distiller's Edition. 12 years old. 43% abv. $100 CAD. Lowland Single Malt.
Sniffing around:
Simon starts us off with a bit of apples, little malty, little caramel butterscotch, little fruity (raspberry, strawberry). Nice balance of Speyside/Highland aromas. Little toffee. Little nutty.
Trevor adds pears. Nice bouquet or orchard fruits. Cherries too.
Scott pulls some milk chocolate. Raspberry chocolate.
For Kyle it's all about the pears and apples.
We cheers!
Little sour Scott says.
Tastes kinda Cognac-y Simon adds. Toffee, wine-y. White grape juice.
Trevor gets a Fun Dip, apple/pear note.
Scott goes for grape flavoring.
Dangerous scotch. Flavorful, decent complexity, and smooth. Comes through pretty full, 46-48% feel to it.
Trevor pull a salted caramel note. Scott agrees with the salty note.
Reviews: Kyle's pick so he starts us off. He lands on 83. This is well balanced on the nose and palate. Could see himself getting a bottle. Scott goes 84. He's not getting as much complexity on the palate compared to the nose, but still very nice flavors, fuller than a 43%. Mouth coating. The artificial flavoring aspect of it isn't as great but still, well put together. Simon is right there with them. This is what you want from a lower proof. It's easy drinking yet full and not boring. Well balanced. He's going with 85. Sean pins it at 84, nothing to add. Trevor wraps it up with a 83. Comes together well and fairly complex. Dangerous whisky. Averages out to 83.8.
Overall: Funny enough, this is not as controversial as Glenkinchie 12 but lands at the exact same average score. It's rare the crew is so much in agreement but this scotch is just very well done. A solid sipper if that's what you're looking for.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
