Our first bourbon review was Old Forester 1920 and it blew our palates off. We've been looking to try more Old Foresters since then so when this showed up we snagged it. Good timing too because we just had our first snowfall yesterday and gotta warm up!
Old Forester 1870: Straight Bourbon so at least 2 years old, 45% abv, $70 CAD, hailing from Kentucky.
Smelling around:
Exactly what you'd expect from OF Simon says: oaky, cherries, cinnamon baking spices.
Scott adds red sucker candy, cherry cough syrup without any of the bad flavors.
A little corn syrup Sean adds.
We cheers.
Simon starts us off with oaky, not a big finish. Fruit syrup.
Bitter cherry Scott says. Cinnamon oak. Red candy flavor.
Pretty smooth.
Sean says the bitterness throws it off for him a bit. Scott doesn't mind it for a change.
Corn comes through a bit Trevor say.
Reviews: Kyle's pick. It's a good bourbon. Not a fan of the bitter notes here but it's better than the OF 86. It's got a good balance. It's enjoyable but not something he will reach for often. 75 for him. He stole Simon's number. He's going 75 as well. It's a well rounded bourbon. For the price he thinks there's better options out there though. Sean is also at 75. It's good but lacking something. He agrees it's pretty balanced and he likes the cherry note. Overall had higher expectations. Scott is our highest bidder tonight at 83. He actualy likes the bitter notes, it's smooth, it's got more mature characteristics than the standard bourbon, he really enjoys this. Trevor rounds us out with 77. He thinks it's nice and easy-drinking. Nothing very unique to offer though. Averages out to 77.
Overall: Decent showing here for Old Forester but the crew had higher expectations. With the exception of Scott it doesn't look like we'll be stocking this one.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
