We had a good snow recently but back to fall weather here in Southern Ontario. We've been looking forward to this whisky wrapping up the lower core line of Macallan. The Triple Cask was a bit of a let down so let's see how this one fares.
Macallan 12 Sherry Oak: 43% abv, Speyside Single Malt, $150 CAD, aged in Sherry casks for 12 years.
Sniffing around:
Kyle starts us off with raisins, prunes, dark full bodied red wine.
Trevor gets some dark chocolate. Tootsie roll.
Scott goes for a black tea note. Between english breakfast and orange pekoe. Leathery note. Smooth on the nose.
Simon pulls some molasses. This doesn't have the Macallan-ness. More generic big sherry bomb scotch.
We cheers.
Simon says it's oakier than he was expecting. Otherwise ditto from the nose. Raisins, molasses. Fruity pipe tobacco.
Scott gets a fizzy feel. Oakier, spicier than the nose would let on. Leather. Earthy note. Some dirt. Simon agrees, damp earth.
Kyle finds a bitter note on the finish.
Trevor gets the oaky notes too.
Reviews: Sean's pick. He starts us off with 72. He likes it but doesn't blow him away. He likes the Double Cask line. Scott had the same 72 in mind. This isn't a Macallan he would reach for. It's different but it's not doing much for him. Kyle pins it at 67. He agrees, the nose was great but it's a bit light and off. Simon is in a different ballpark. He loves the meaty oaky sherry bomb, but it needs more punch. It's well balanced it's flavorful, but it's a little flat. The exact same scotch at 50% would easily be in the 90s. Going with 80. Trevor rounds it out with a 75. Averages out to 71.8.
Overall: This is a good scotch but no where near worth the price tag and most of us prefer the Double Cask 12. If you're looking for a meaty sherry bomb there's better ones out there for a fraction of the cost.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew.
