#259: Yellow Spot

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

It's that time of the year! Family, thoughtfulness, gratitude, vacation, new year new me on our minds. Looking back on this year we've outdone ourselves again! Going on three years now of weekly whisky reviews. We started hosting virtual events now, and we have even bigger plans for 2023. This has been fun and I hope those of you keeping up with us have enjoyed as well.

Yellow Spot: 12 years old, 46% abv, $100 CAD, aged in a mix of bourbon, sherry, and malaga casks. Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

We're sniffing:

Nice nose Kyle says. We all agree. He gets red liquorish and nailpolish remover. That nailpolish goes away after a few minutes.

Very malty Scott adds. Syruppy. Smells rich and thick. Doughy, baked bread. Fruit loops.

Trevor finds a sour note, sourdough bread.

Simon pulls a sweet clay note that he gets from a lot of Irishes. Some grappa notes too.

We cheers.

Not as thick as Scott expected but coats nice. There's a warmth but not spicy. Otherwise pretty copy paste between nose and palate. Nice and sweet with a hint of bitterness. Little earthy. Fruit loop note is still there.

Kyle agrees, that artificial candy sweetness with the cereal.

Simon gets a nice body on this one, good thickness. Honey, clay, butterscotch desert finish.

Reviews: Scott's pick and he'll start us off strong with an 86. Nice mouthfeel, nothing bad to say about this. Comes together really well delicious stuff. Probably would have a bottle on his shelf. Trevor lands on 83. Agrees with Scott, smooth, easy drinking, nice fruity notes. Well rounded. Kyle goes 82. Simon thinks this is a well done characteristically Irish whiskey. A baseline that uses to review other Irish whiskeys. 79 for him. Sean wraps it up with an 80. Averages out to 82.

Overall: We are in agreement here that is a very well done crowd pleasing Irish whiskey. It's got a solid body, mostly sweet flavors, definitely something we would point to as an intro to Irish. That said, it's on the simple side and for the price it's unlikely any of us will be stocking it regularly. Scott might. We recommend you find it at a bar before you splurge on a bottle.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
