Another week another review! We haven't had a Glenrothes in a while and this one was well reviewed so we pulled the trigger on it.
Glenrothes Maker's Cut: No age statement, 48.8% abv, aged in seasoned sherry casks, Speyside Single Malt.
We're sniffing:
Simon starts us off with Sherry notes. Butterscotch, toffee.
Red and black licorish Kyle says.
Scott goes for caramel apples from the fairs.
It smells pretty strong. Smells like 50%.
Trevor gets a cherry.
We cheers.
Trevor goes for molasses.
Dark chocolate Scott says.
Simon gets a little oaky, good body, little spicy. Coffee. Solid balance.
Something bittery/syruppy on the finish. Reminds Trevor of a maple syrup. Thick.
Scott says this scotch tastes like bourbon aged maple syrup on pancakes with dark chocolate melted on top and a black coffee.
Toffee comes out more with time.
Interesting how the nose and palate were different on this one. A lot more bitter oaky chocolate notes on the palate, whereas the nose was all sweet.
Trevor pulls some orange peel.
Reviews: Simon is really enjoying this, not planning on getting a bottle but this is certainly tasty. 81. Trevor lands on 78. It's nice but not blowing his mind. Scott goes 79. Middle of the road scotch, but still enjoyable, great nose. Not going to look for a bottle though. Kyle goes 65, it's too hot for him, even water didn't help. He likes the nose but not really enjoying this overall. Sean pins it at 76. It's good but again not going to look for a bottle. Averages out to 75.8.
Overall: This is a nice scotch but it's not landing on any of the crew's shelf unfortunately. It's well rounded and tasty but there's a wow factor missing there for us to want another 750 mLs of it.
Cheers!
The S&P crew.
