#264: Starlight Bourbon finished in VDN bottled for Canada

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Good morning all! Simon here.

Big fan of Starlight. Hosted a tasting with them for my fellow Canadians earlier this year with some crazy standouts. This one showed up in Alberta recently and I had tried the rye in VDN (which I loved) but not the bourbs so went for it. VDN for reference stands for Vino De Naranja, so orange wine. Hence the nice orange-y notes that come through. If you remember the Amrut tasting from a couple years back, they do something similar with the Naarangi where they ferment orange peels in a barrel before finishing their single malt. It's debatable whether you still end up with single malt or bourbon after the finishing, but what's not debatable is that this brilliant.

Starlight Bourbon in VDN Canada release, barrel no. 22-2140-1, 54% ABV. $150 CAD.

👃🏻 its tight. You get orange with baking spices, very pot pouri but no funk. Orange notes are opening up well.

👅 really nice vdn/bourbon mix. Its mostly vdn but not too much so. Lots of orange peel, some spice, some baking spices. I like it, well done. 86/87.

Overall: this is a solid bourbon, the orange flavors are very well married and balanced with the bourbon flavors, it feels great. I prefered the rye in VDN personally. I will not be looking for a bottle but this should be on your radar to at least try a sample.

Cheers!
