It's a cloudy evening on this June 7th 2020. The air is heavy and laden with the scent of welting lilacs and blooming irises. As the 3pm caffeine wears off and eyelids tinkle with a pleasant heaviness, we pour in these Glencairn glasses an aromatic nectar named... Auchentoshan 12.

A reminder for those reading through, this blog is by amateurs for amateurs, a more down to earth and relatable experience than the high flung expert tastings we commonly find online and on the back of bottles.

This week is Kyle Rasksen's pick. To join him are Simon Savard, Trevor Wallace, Sean Laffan, and Scott Van Schyndel.

Simon gets fruit on the nose. Smells almost like a fruity mix drink rather than a scotch.

Kyle tastes sweet, fruity, citrus, smooth, no burn. This is a triple distilled whisky, which may explain the lack of burn there.

Trevor kind of gets the cereal, which the label points to. Throughout this tasting Trevor's pallet disagrees with everyone. Not sure what he ate that day. Trevor gets caramel. Floral smell. Scott gets the floral smell.

Sean gets a good lingering spice there. Simon too.

Scott points out that this a recommended scotch for bourbon drinkers. We all get why.

Simon is pleasantly surprised by this scotch. There's a mix of sweet tartness, floral notes, and spice that's enjoyable. Easy to drink. The downside of this bottle, which everyone agrees on, is that this tastes nothing like a scotch. In a blind tasting we would guess this is a fruit brandy or an odd rum. It has no smokiness at all, no peat. No barley that comes through. Nothing to identify it as a scotch.

Trevor adds that he wouldn't get it again because it gives the wrong impression of scotch, although he does enjoy the flavors.

For ratings we've got Kyle at a 62, Simon/Trevor/Sean all on the same page at 70, and Scott is less impressed at 60. For Scott there's nothing wrong with it, it's just that the way it interests us is as a mystery drink. He would recommend it to someone who was bored. The average makes it a 66.4.

At $61C this is a decently valued bottle, but like Scott said, we would only recommend it if... you wanted a scotch that tasted like a decent fruit brandy? Likely not something you'll see on our shelves.

Thanks for signing in folks!
