Amrut Fusion

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

We continue to branch out on our whisky journey here on S&P. This time we're going to India. Definitely not a country we expected to be sampling from when we launched on this journey almost a year ago now. We've seen something about these being young because the hot and humid climate speeds up aging. Not sure if that's a marketing gimmick or a scientific fact, but this was a great experience, so we're not complaining.

Amrut Fusion, 50% ABV, bourbon cask, supposedly peated.

We sniff around.

Trevor starts us off with fruity and floral.

Scott says grape candy. Like if you get a ''grape'' flavored candy or gatorade. This is what it smells like. We're all pretty excited about it. It's spot on. This has got us reminiscing about Fun Dip. Apples come up too but is dwarfed by the grape candy. Kyle says prunes and dates. He says he's a date connoisseur. An array of fruits on the nose here.

Simon says that going in blind on the nose he'd call it a brandy.

Very thick dregs that just don't want to come back down.

Scott points out that although this is a new range of aromas, there's nothing complex about this nose.

There's a debate about whether you can get the peat. Scott says he definitely gets it, Simon can't see it. For Sean it comes and goes. You gotta dig for it.

We cheers.

The grape candy is still there but there's more to it on the palate.

Trevor and Sean go for a bitter cough syrup.

Scott and Simon are feeling more sourness than bitter.

Very full flavors. Rich, with a butterscotchiness to it. Kyle says candied apple.

Tastes like it's been marinated in suckers.

Good mouthfeel. It's got a tingle to it.

Scott gets a strawberry. Overripe ones.

Nose changes over time. Not all about the grape candy now. There's a maple syrup note to it now. And raisins.

Reviews: Trevor starts us off with a 75. Lots of cool things. Dynamic. It loses points because he doesn't see himself reaching out for it often. It's well done, just not something that tickles his tastebuds. For Simon this may very well become a staple on his shelf. At $84 this is great value and the ABV gives it a nice kick with full candy fruity flavors. It nails his sweet tooth. He goes 87. Kyle is on the same page. He likes the raisin, the maple syrup, the richness. It would definitely be on his shelf, he goes 85. Sean's turn, he likes a lot about this, he gets that hint of peat, but it's got too short of a finish for him. He lands on 79. Scott is a little torn. This has been so fun, he would be excited to share this with people. At the same time, not necessarily something he's going to come back to frequently. That said it's delicious, he gets the bit of peat on the tail, goes 83. Averages out to 81.8.

Overall: We think you should give this a shot. It's got a hard to find character to it, a flavor profile that stands out. If our notes don't sound like you'd drink a whole bottle, order it at a bar. This ranks number 8 on our value scale, just below Glendronach 12. We'll be interested in trying some more nectars from India in the near future.

Cheers!
