#169: Amrut Single Malt

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Halloween time meant party time not that long ago. Now it's trick or treat time, with cute little devils and lions and princesses running around. How things change with kids eh.

We ponder on this tonight with a glass of Amrut Single Malt. We tried the Amrut Fusion back in March and it left us wanting to dig through the rest of their lineup.

Amrut Single Malt: 46% ABV, $75 CAD, american oak casks, Indian whisky.

We sniff around:

Scott starts us off with apples, syrup, honey, pears.

Simon says this smells like gingerale. Mixed with apple juice. He also gets honey, malty, and licorice.

Sean gets little sherry influence.

Trevor gets some Indian spices in there, not sure if that's placebo. He gets like a honey glazed samosa.

Scott pulls a hint of cherry. Some kind of berry.

Simon calls out a guava note. Some kind of tropical fruit.

The nose is impressive. Lots of subtle things.

We cheers.

The first thing that jumps out to us is the fizzy feel, little evaporation. It feels very good at 46%. Coats the tongue.

Simon gets some similar notes to the nose, honey, malty, herbally licorice.

Scott gets some herbally spices in there too.

Simon is still getting a little ginger, gingerale. He's getting more approval from the crew on the palate than the nose for that note.

Kyle gets a raisin note in there.

Not a big finish. Honey herbally taste that sticks around for a little bit.

Reviews: Kyle's pick. This is a great base for Amrut here. Our experience starting off with all the distilleries base offering is that it can start a little too tame and boring, but this is bold and interesting. Kyle's got an 82 on this, good flavors, good feel. Simon's going 83, he likes that it's got different flavors than we're used to with scotch. Something you should expect on his shelf at some point. Trevor is at 85. Interesting nose. Pleasant taste, very enjoyable. Scott is at 78. Copy paste from nose to palate. It's neat. Enjoyable. Sean is our lowest bidder at 70 tonight. The finish throws it off for him, and he's not a fan of the black liquorish note that comes through. It's OK. We average out to 79.6 tonight.

Overall: Good value on this bottle. If you've been drinking some scotch single malts and are looking for something a little different, we think this is a great place to start. The flavors come through nicely. Something you should expect to see on a few of us' shelve at some point. We'll certainly have some more Amrut reviews coming up in 2022.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
