anCnoc 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

The last scotch of round 2! We've been getting 3 bottles each and splitting them 5-ways, so 15 scotches per round. We've got our round 3 scotches split up now, starting next week with Bowmore 15. We've got a couple curve balls next round with an Indian Single Malt, and an Japanese Single Malt. The top picks we're excited about are Lagavulin 12 (2018), Bowmore 15, and Glenlivet 18. Our experience with Glenlivet hasn't been the greatest so we're hoping there's some redemption with the 15 and 18 coming up in round 3. We should have most of the scotch industry's standard offerings under our belt if we keep this up a few more rounds. At which point are you no longer an amateur? We feel a little in between. We've delved deep enough that we're comfortable in a scotch conversation, but now we also know what we don't know. Every time you open one door, you find several new doors to open.

Anyway, today we review anCnoc 12, 40% ABV. Refill barrels. $80 CAD.

We sniff around.

Sweet and winey. Smells like a sweet white wine. A little champagne maybe.

Apples pop out.

Trevor points to a little lemon and honey.

Simon gets a little butterscotch.

It's nice, light, everything is little but pleasant about this nose.

We cheers.

A little warmth.

Kyle says its pretty empty, other than the warmth he doesn't get much. Watered down taste. Hollow Scott says.

Simon gets a bit more nuances. It is light but there's a peachy apricot kind of sweetness.

Trevor gets a little lemon and caramel.

Simon points to a herbal. Scott gets a little grassiness, like chives.

Everyone's coming around to the peachy sweetness. Simon calls it fuzzy peaches, Sean goes more for a peach iced tea flavor.

Sean would like to see this as a cask strength.

It gets more interesting as you dig into it. Simon thinks it's decently complex.

Reviews: Trevor's pick. If you poke around you dig up some flavors. It's nice, but not enough going on for him to get too excited. He goes 72. Simon goes next, it's light, not the kind of stuff he's going to look for but he had fun digging into it, he goes 69. Scott goes 66. He thinks this might be a good beginner's beginner scotch. There's a couple things he enjoyed, the white wine nose, the grassiness. It feels watered down but there's nothing offensive about it. Sean gives it a 70. There's not much to say, it's interesting but a little thin. Kyle likes his scotches full bodied and rich, and he starts off by apologizing for being the first one to give a scotch a failing grade. He's going 49. This is the type of stuff you make in your basement, and he feels like he's wasting time drinking it. There's nothing to it as far as he's concerned. He's getting pretty worked up, I won't transcript his entire rant. We average out to 65.2.

Overall: leaving Kyle as an outlier, this is an inoffensive, light, sweet scotch. Some of us find a little bit to dig into, but it looks light, it feels light, and it tastes light. This is the Pinot Grigio of scotches. If that sounds like a good thing to you, then by all means, this is exactly what you're looking for. For us though it's a pass, especially at the $80 CAD price tag.

Cheers!
