Bowmore 15

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

It's been a snowless winter for a few years now in Southern Ontario. Well practically. We got one ''snowstorm''. There's still about a month to go so we'll see. Us Canadians like our white winters, so we're hoping these are just odd years and not the new ''climate change'' trends.

In the meantime, we're tasting some Bowmore 15 together tonight. 43% ABV. Ex-bourbon and sherry barrels. $100 CAD here in Ontario. We had a good experience with Bowmore 12 so we've been looking forward to this.

We sniff around.

Simon points an orange liqueur. Or chocolates filled with liqueur.

Scott says light smokiness, but mostly sweet. Terry's chocolate orange

Little caramel or a toffee.

Sean points to a red wine note.

We cheers.

So rich.

Scott says it's an explosion of flavors. Sweet, fruity, and full flavored; hint of peat. Delicious.

Trevor sees a little peat, gets a meaty taste too, like meaty bbq.

Overall though it's a follow through from the nose. We can pretty much copy and paste. The peat pops a little bit more on the palate, but it's still in the background. It's still that orange chocolate liqueur that dominates the palate.

It's really got some unique flavors we haven't seen yet.

Nice soft heat to it.

Sean still gets that red wine, acidic taste that he was expecting from the nose. Little tart on the finish.

Simon points to almost a chocolate milk flavor that comes through after a few sips. The chocolate flavor defines itself over time.

Reviews: Scott is really excited about this. It does everything for him. The full fruity chocolaty flavors, the soft heat, it's all coming together to create the best experience he's had so far. His rating reflects that, he goes 94. Trevor is comparing this to the Uigeadail, it's got a similar full-flavored, fruity-smoky thing going on. He wants to rate this a small notch down from the Ardbeg and he goes 91. The rest of us are also enjoying it but not enough to get near the 90s. We have to respect that this is well done and unique but not quite our cup of flavors. Simon goes 83, Sean goes 83, and Kyle goes 84. Averages out to 87.

Overall: We recommend you try this. At $100 CAD this is well priced compared to other scotches. It's not that easy to source, especially around here, but this is good stuff and it's likely you'll find it on our shelves (especially Scott's shelf) at some point. It's got some hard to find flavors and it's tasty.

Cheers!
