#174: Bowmore No. 1

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

And finishing with the cheapest of the bunch, we've officially reviewed all of Bowmore's core line up! We started with the 12 on day 1, and then recently the 18 and 25 from the core line up, and now last and also least, the Bowmore No. 1.

Bowmore No. 1: 40% ABV, $58 CAD, Islay single malt, aged in ex-bourbon barrels.

Sniffing around:

Kyle starts us off with apples.

Trevor gets Caramel.

Scott pulls some bitter note. Like citrus bitter. There's that peaty comes through. There's some kind of fruit there too. Tangerine? Plum?

Simon goes for some simple syrup/honey, malty, minerally, fermented aromas.

Sean agrees with Simon, adds some lemon notes and caramel.

We cheers.

Trevor gets some smoky caramel. Like a toffee almost.

Kyle thinks it's more nutty. It's a bit watered down he feels. Uneventful finish.

Scott agrees there's a smoky something but hard to pinpoint. There's a butter note there. Like a brick of butter. Scott gets the Tootsie Roll flavor on the finish.

Very smooth. Definitely a Bowmore.

Sean goes for a bit of smoke, bit of honey, bit of lemon. It's balanced but feels watered down. Short sweet smoke finish.

Simon gets malty, honey, sourdough notes. Honey Nut Cherrios. You can barely tell this is peated. Malt candy note. The peat comes through as an old richness. A little overripeness. Not much on the finish. Slightly spicy.

Reviews: Kyle thinks it's decent but on the lighter side. Could make a good starter scotch. He likes the caramel nutty notes. 72 for him. Trevor thinks this is great, doing a few things very well. 83 for him. Scott is also at 83. It feels a little weaker than it's Bowmore sibblings, but all around it's really good, and it introduces you to tons of different flavors. He would recommend the Bowmore 12 over this one though, but this is complex enough to land in the 80s. Simon wishes this had a stronger body. At 50%, this may be in the 90s for him. He loves the flavors, it's just too weak to score high. Still wants to stamp an 80 on it. Couple points above the 12 for him actually. Sean is at 63 on this one. The finish is just too weak. It's OK but may as well get the Bowmore 12 for $10 more. Averages out to 76.2.

Overall: This does fairly well for the price. There's no consensus within the group though. It definitely differentiates itself from the other Bowmores, and shows a maltier, honey side of the distillate. If you're interested, this is a good value buy here, so you can't go too wrong. A few of us will stock it eventually.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
