Cardhu 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

The S&P crew has a lot riding on the elections tomorrow. Bottles of scotch are on the line. Scott is hoping for a bottle of Macallan 12 Double Cask, Simon for a Lagavulin 8. We take a seat back here in Canada and look to the south for political entertainment and these last couple years have not disappointed.

In the meantime we're trying some Cardhu 12. Scott's pick.

This scotch makes up a good chunk of Johnnie Walker blend we hear. Speyside scotch.

We sniff around.

Scott has a hard time figuring out the nose. He's thinking earthy. Trevor gets a little dirt too.

Simon thinks he's got the nose down. It's malty sweet, with sourdough bread as the malt, and the sweetness is more vague but revolves around an apple fruitiness.

Honey a bit.

Kyle got a whiff of cherry but it's gone. He gets the apple. He gets the honey.

Sean calls it green apple.

It's a straightforward nose, not a whole lot of complexity.

We cheers.

Short finish here.

Nice warmth.

Little sweetness, Simon calls it honey.

Sean points out a lemon. There's a little tartness there yes. Trevor agrees with the lemon.

Simon says the malty, sourdough notes comes out.

A little oak.

We all converge on a sour salty finish. Sean adds caramel to the finish. Nice finish.

Let's get to ratings.

0/10 - Undrinkable

20/30 - Mixer

40/50 - Drinkable

60/70 - Enjoyable

80/90 - Delicious

95+ - Ambrosia

Scott starts us off. He goes 70. It doesn't quite live up to expectations but certainly enjoyable and he's had fun digging into it with us. Simon goes 73. He likes the malty notes and there's a time of the year on a hot sunny afternoon where this would be perfect with an ice cube. Lacks the complexity that and high 70s/80s would have. Sean likes these flavors. He goes 72. Kyle does enjoy it but he's not a huge fan. He gets a pasty finish that's not all that great. He goes 60. Trevor says it's mildly interesting and enjoyable. He goes 66. We average out at 68.2 here. Slightly below average.

The S&P crew does enjoy this, it's got nice tasting notes, but at $83.00 here in Ontario there are far better options, Glendronach 12, Highland Park 12, and Auchentoshan Three Wood all rate much higher at the same price point and similar (ish) tasting notes. Aberfeldy 12 also has similar malty notes for a fraction of the cost. That said if you're looking for something new there's no wasted money here, and it's certainly a pretty looking bottle.

Cheers!
