Compass Box Peat Monster

Alright, Scott and Simon here, finishing the last dram of this Compass Box sampler on a sunny April evening with some patties on the grill.

Compass Box Peat Monster. 46%. Blended. $86 CAD.

We sniff her:

Simon says this is Caol Ila esque. You've got that clean peat halfway between soft smoke and earthy. You've got the saltiness.

Scott goes more for Kilchoman. This has those hay notes that stood out a lot for him with the Machir Bay.

It's sharp, it's clean, it's crisp. Nice nose.

We cheers.

Simon getting a potent lemongrass note. Salty savory. It's not as Coal Ila esque on the palate. There's some off notes there, something slightly sweet, a little funky honey.

Scott agrees, it's like a sweetened hay. The peat isn't as prominent behind the savory brine. He's still thinking this is closer to the Machir Bay, a bit more savory/spicy.

Reviews: We both agree this is great. Simon is adding this to the rotation of Lag 8/Caol Ila 12/Ardbeg 10/Port Charlotte 10 of young savory Islays. Scott also thinks this has a great feel to it. We haven't checked the make up yet, Simon guesses this has Bunnahabain in it. He thinks that little sweet funk is a Bunnahabain/Coal Ila mix. Scott sticks to his Kilchoman/Caol Ila blend. We know that's tough luck based on Kilchoman being a younger distillery but that's what his tastebuds are saying with the hay notes. Both of us land on an 85.

Overall: So we were right on the Caol Ila, it's about 65%. But the remaining 35% is... Laphroaig! Did not see that coming. See the total makeup here. All 3 of these Compass Box blends were equally well executed in our opinion. Everyone of them well balanced and tasty, with enough complexity to make them interesting. In fact Scott rated all three the same at 85. Every sample (Spaniard, Spice Tree, and Peat Monster) has left us wanting more. Simon thinks they're equally well executed, but the Peat Monster just nailed his tastebuds a bit more, hence the higher rating. Everyone of these are great value below $100 CAD. We hope to add these to our cabinets soon to share with the rest of the crew.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
