Dalmore 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Remembrance day is coming up shortly here in Canada. It seems to us that people have recently been tempted to remember the less savory aspects of our history, and look at the past with tainted lenses. We at Scotch & Ponder prefer to look behind us with pride at the road travelled, and we respect and look up to our elder's progress and values, rather than scorn them for their shortcomings.

We ponder on this tonight with a savory glass of Dalmore 12.

Nose: it smells like a bourbon. hot and sweet, honey vanilla, a little fruit.

Nice nose.

We cheers.

Mmm lots of wood notes here.

Simon points to a little fruit, maybe an orange peel kind of thing?

Scott calls it cherry. Simon thinks he nailed it.

Kyle says it tastes like a Slovenian desert called Potica (poh-TEET-sah). None of us can say we've had it.

It's pretty rich and flavorful.

Simon gets the traditional bourbon flavors on the palate too with vanilla/caramel, and a decent heat.

There's a nice bitterness on the palate that follows through on the finish that Simon wants to call herbal. Doesn't get a ton of traction here.

The oak follows through on the finish.

Ratings: Simon starts us off with a 75. He likes the oak that stands out, he likes to bourbon flavors. Not sure he'd pick up a bottle or order at a bar with decent selection but it's certainly tasty. Kyle goes 80. He'd look for a bottle. He likes the bourbon flavors, the complexity. Scott goes 83, really enjoying this. Sean goes 81 too. Dalmore 12 getting some love from the S&P crew. Trevor think it's fine but for him it's pretty average and he goes 72. We average out to 78.2.

For $100C in Ontario, we run counter to the typical Dalmore 12 review and say this is a pretty good value. It's got enough complexity and flavor to rival most other bottles at that price point. I don't think it would rank high on our recommendations list, but if you've been eyeing it for some time, we say go for it. Scott and Kyle are both planning to pick up a bottle at some point.

To give some context our average review is 72.7 and scotches that rank around the average are Talisker 10 (72.6), Glenmorangie Lasanta (73.3), and Glenfiddich 14 (71.6).

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
