Glen Grant 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

We welcome on this review a new life, Garrison Wolf Savard. Little Garrison was born February 6th, 9:45AM, after 35 hours of labor, 8.5 pounds. A skinny but tall little boy. Makes his daddy proud already. We wish you all the best Garrison, may you honour and celebrate the gift you've been given, live in equal parts of prosperity and adversity, and may you enjoy many long evenings with your father indulging in whisky and cigars.

We cheers to life tonight with Glen Grant 12. Speyside. 43% ABV. $70 CAD.

We sniff around.

Standard speyside nose. Apples are dominant. Bright, light apples. Very similar to the Glenlivet 15 nose we reviewed recently.

Simon says the lightness of it gives it almost a floral aroma. Scott can see that, it's almost like stuffing your nose in apple blossoms.

Sean goes for a little honey and baking spices. Trevor for a butterscotch. We like the honey more than the butterscotch, it's too light, not rich enough for us to agree on butterscotch.

It's a simple nose but it's fragrant. Nice.

We cheers.

There's a decent amount of heat here, but overall it's a copy paste from the nose.

The big difference which everyone but Scott picks up on, is that the apples are sour/bitter on the palate.

Sean brings up peach, which is a nice catch we think.

You can get a little honey in there too.

Reviews: Trevor's pick so he starts us off. Nothing pops out here. Consistent nose and palate. Overall not a whole lot that makes him want to seek this out. That said it's an easy sipper and he goes 63. Simon is roughly on the same boat. He thinks Glenfiddich 12 is very similar to this but a little better, and for a few dollars less, he would always get Glenfiddich 12 over this. That bitter apple stands out a little too much for him too which he doesn't like. Goes 63 as well. Scott agrees here, he finds this a little boring. He compared this more to Glenlivet 15 but he thinks it deserves one point more than it. That lands him at a 69. Kyle and Sean both think this is mostly boring but fine which lands them both on a flat 60. Averages out to 63.

Overall: This isn't bad by any means, but it lacks anything unique and it's outclassed by cheaper, more readily available options. The S&P crew doesn't recommend this one. Just stick to Glenfiddich 12 for your plain Speyside.

Cheers!
