Glenfarclas 12

And Spring is in full swing. From one street to the next aromas of hyacinths, manure, and apple blossoms alternate as farmers and mother nature change gears. The tools sleeping for 4 months are getting oiled up and back in service. Every day now you hear a chainsaw, a lawnmower, or a hammer ringing through the neighbourhood as projects and property maintenance are back on people's minds.

We ponder on this today with a glass of Glenfarclas 12. Our first of many Glenfarclas here on S&P. 43% ABV. Oloroso sherry casks. $73 CAD here on Ontario.

We sniff around.

Trevor starts us off with sweet apples.

Simon says it smell like a bowl of honey nut cherrios but with sherry instead of milk.

Everyone likes the honey cereal idea. Scott says frosted flakes. Sean goes for lucky charms without the marshmallows.

Simon can go for floral, it's got a sweet delicate lightness to it that he often associates with floral.

Scott can pull some earthy notes.

We cheers.

Simon and Trevor start us off with sweet and tart. Spicy butterscotch finish.

Scott likes the little warm spice. Butterscotchy syrup. Rich. Desert scotch. Quite sweet.

Sean gets a maltiness. The sherry pops a bit for him too now.

Kyle gets a sour note on the finish. Reminds him of the Aberlour 12 overall.

We don't have too much else to say. This is nice. The few notes it does have are nicely balanced. Not much depth but well rounded. We like the name Glenfarclas. Playful. Except for Scott, he thinks the labelling makes it look cheap, hence he's pleasantly surprise that he enjoys it.

Ratings: Kyle's pick so he kicks us off. Nose and palate offer some diversity, cereal on the nose, sour spicy butterscotch on the palate. Easy drinking. He like this, especially the nose. Goes 77. Scott is going 74. Beat his expectation. It's great for what it is. Tasty, smooth. A little too sweet but a glass or two for desert would be nice. Would make a great intro scotch. Simon lands on 73. It's well done, nothing bad to say about it, nice balance, but it's not punchy or complex enough to get into the 80s. Trevor rates this a 74. It's not quite his cup of scotch, doesn't wow him, but it's doing what it's trying to do well. Sean closes us out with a 74. Good scotch, deserves an average score. Averages out to 74.4.

Overall: The S&P crew thinks this is a great place to start. Similar to Bowmore 12 in the sense that this is an easy drinking, balanced, light/medium-bodied with 3-5 easily identifyable flavors, and for these reasons it would serve as a great introduction scotch. It's going to be low on our priority list but may very well end up on our shelves at some point. It's certainly got us interested in exploring the rest of the Glenfarclas line and see how they build on this. Sean bought the Glenfarclas 105 which we'll get to dig into sometime this summer. Looking forward to that.

Cheers!
