It's surprisingly chilly on June 13th 2020 in Southern Ontario. As gales hit the beech tree, chestnuts fall on my shed playing an off-beat symphony of drums to enjoy as we dive into these glasses full of thick, oily drams and dregs.
We're tasting Glenfiddich Project XX today.
A reminder for those reading through, this blog is by amateurs for amateurs, a more down to earth and relatable experience than the high flung expert tastings we commonly find online and on the back of bottles.
This is Trevor Wallace's pick. To join him are Simon Savard, Kyle Rasksen, Scott Van Schyndel, and Sean Laffan. Andy Plomp is drinking CC and coke.
The whisky has a neat back story. Twenty experts were invited to the Glenfiddich distillery to each select a barrel that were then mixed together to create this experimental single malt.
Simon picks up an array of fruits on the nose. Everyone agrees the nose is very pleasant and complex. There's a little something beyond the fruit too, a hoppy, oaky smell. Trevor and Kyle pick up on vanilla odors.
On the first couple sips we all agree the spice is overpowering. With some concentration we can pick up on apple and pear notes that Sean points out. The barley comes out a bit that distinguishes scotches. No smoke, no peat.
The spice tames over time. Watering this down helps too and brings out the vanilla and oak notes. We agree the taste does not live up to the nose on this one.
Kyle is alone in picking up on chocolate and dark cherry notes.
Simon's tongue is numb after a dozen sips.
Very nice presentation on this bottle.
Overall, the Scotch & Ponder crew is not impressed with this scotch. Ratings are 70 for Trevor, 60 for Sean and Kyle, 56 for Simon, 50 for Scott. Averages out to 59.2.
For something rating well below average and $100C, this is overvalued and we don't recommend you try it out. Many more interesting and enjoyable options at that price point or less.
Cheers!
The S&P Crew
