Glenlivet 18

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

Following our Glenlivet 15 review we're doing Glenlivet 18. There's still a couple standard Glenlivets out there, notably the Cognac casks, the rum casks, and the Nadurra. So we still have a few bottles to seek out, but this review will clear all the reasonably priced age statements. It's been fun for us to cross scotches off the list, see how far we've come and how far we have to go. Halfway to 3 figures! our 50th review here.

Glenlivet 18, 40% ABV, $150 CAD in Ontario, Speyside. Here we go.

We sniff around.

Smells richer, more depth to it than the 15. Syrupy. Caramelly syrup. Butterscotch. Vanilla.

Simon points to a candy apple. Trevor calls it liquorish. Sean goes for an orange/citrus note.

Definitely more complexity here. Not too potent though.

We cheers.

Little heat.

Simon says it was red candy apple on the nose, but butterscotch covered apple on the palate.

Doesn't have the diluted feel that the 15 had. Still a little thin.

More rich. Scott gets dark chocolate vapor on the finish. A little short.

Sean points to a baking spice. Cinnamon apple crumble type of thing. We see that.

Kyle goes for a green jolly rancher.

Reviews: Sean's pick again. He likes it. Definitely differentiates itself from the 15. The 15 is light and bright, this is more rich and complex. Sees this as a good scotch to pair with an apple desert. Goes 77. Trevor calls it more full bodied than the 15. He likes the apple cinnamon. That said it doesn't wow him. Goes 67. Simon says it's well done. Decent complexity. He wishes there was a bit more oomph to it but what do you expect at 40%. He goes 75. Scott says this is favorite Glenlivet so far. It's a good scotch, not miraculous by any means, but it's a redemption for Glenlivet and well rounded. Goes 76. Kyle goes 74. Enjoys it. Averages out to 73.8.

Overall: This is a redemption for Glenlivet. That said, we had to spend a pretty penny to get there. At $150 CAD here, this does not fare well on our value chart. It rates lower than the Glenlivet 15 in terms of value. For a $150 bottle we would expect at least a 79/80 average rating. That said it's a good scotch and so if gifted or if heavily discounted, we think you'll enjoy it.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
