Glenmorangie 10

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

A big classic this week that's taken a while to get to: Glenmorangie 10. The S&P crew is getting together tonight to split our round 4 whiskies, and we took the opportunity to review 4 bottles together, starting with this one. Sadly Sean has moved to Thunder Bay, so although he's still part of the team and we'll shipping samples back and forth, he sends his regrets for this feast of reviews.

Glenmorangie 10, 40% ABV, Highland, $70 CAD, ex-bourbon barrels.

We sniff around.

Simon: It's shy, sweet.

Trevor: Nothing stands out with a punch. Sweet apples.

Scott: Some grassy notes, fresh cut lawn, dry hay.

Kyle: I don't get a lot, just get some sweet.

Simon: You can get more apples from the sample bottle.

Scott: I get the apple on the nose, you guys can't get it?

Trevor: There's a wood type smell. Oak.

Simon: It's opened up a bit but not much more than light apples.

We cheers.

Simon: Nothing wrong with it. Sweet. Little sour note. Light spice.

Trevor: Gets more complex on the finish. Warm finish.

Kyle: Little nuttiness on the finish.

Simon: I can see that.

Scott: What kind of nuts?

Simon/Kyle (at the same time): Pine nuts/Walnuts.

Simon: There's something fruity to it. I get a little musty.

*everyone pokes fun at Simon for abusing ''musty'' as a tasting note. No one else gets it.*

Scott: Malty.

Kyle: Some syrupy notes.

Simon: Definitely what most people would call a smooth scotch.

Trevor: It's a good entry scotch.

Scott: It's a little on the high end of entry level.

Ratings: Simon starts us off with a 68. Nothing wrong but too light and boring to get into the 70s. Not enough of a punch, not enough going on. Scott says that for all those reasons he rates it a 72. It's a crowd pleaser. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it's good. 60s is a bit insulting for this he thinks. Trevor goes 71. Nothing else to say. Kyle says 70. The review is as simple as the scotch. Averages out to 70.3.

Overall: Good one to leave out on the table at a Christmas party. Inoffensive, light, mildly sweet, smooth. Price point checks out. Value rating is 75.2, right at the ''you get what you pay for'' mark.

Cheers!

The S&P Crew.
