Summer is coming to an end. We used to have some natural light to start off our calls, not anymore. The crickets are screaming night and day for a while now. Funny how it seems unbearably loud when you listen, and it becomes background noise when you don't. I wonder to which degree that applies to everything.
Anyway, we're taking Glenrothes 12 on a date tonight, Sean's pick.
We sniff around, Trevor says pear.
Sean is more vague, calls it fruit. Simon says you really smell the sherry influence, prunes or ripe pears. This has been solely matured in sherry casks.
Scott calls it cherries. Kyle and Sean end up more on the pear. No smoke or peat.
Simon can see the cherries and in fact the first thing that came to mind earlier for him are dark chocolate covered cherries.
The consensus here is that this smells great. You can barely tell it's a scotch it's so fruity.
We cheers.
Simon sees some spice, some of the same flavors we got on the nose, but overall too short and mild for him.
After a few sips the tartness acidity comes out clearly.
Scott says the fruitiness makes it hard to pick up on anything else, it's so forefront.
That's pretty much all there is to this one, so let's get to ratings.
A reminder for those reading through, these reviews are by amateurs for amateurs, a more down to earth and relatable experience than the high flung expert tastings we commonly find online and on the back of bottles. Something you can rely on to make decisions about which scotch you want in your cabinet. We've also got 5 pallets here, so you can trust that where we overlap is what you will likely get out of the scotch as well.
Ratings:
Everyone except Scott agree here that despite the great nose, this scotch is lackluster and leaves something wanting. Kyle calls it a scotch you would have after work, something easy to drink that you don't pay much attention to. 60 for Kyle and Trevor, 64 for Sean, 68 for Simon. For Scott though, at $75 this is a bargain, and it's the perfect recommendation to someone who says ''I want a mild and sweet scotch''. For that reason he goes 78 on this. Averages out to 66.
Cheers!
