Jura 12

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

There's spring! Seems like we've been unconsciously suffocating for 4 months, and now we can finally breathe. The earthy breeze announcing the maple's life blood's flowing again. The soil is thawing. The tulip bulbs are releasing their energy. It all comes together in this grassy earthy damp breeze and we open the windows and we can breathe.

We celebrate spring today with a glass of Jura 12. 40% ABV. Slightly peated. Ex-bourbon and ex-sherry mix. $75 CAD

We sniff around.

Simon likes this nose. It's bright and honey sweet. Funky malty, cereal notes.

Scott think it's rather plain. He gets vanilla, salted caramel, syrup. Mostly a plain sweet nose, nice but not much to dig into. Trevor is on the same page.

Sean gets grassy notes.

Simon brings up apple concentrate.

We cheers.

The peat is there on the palate. It's a moldy musty kind of peat. Balanced peat, it's the first thing we bring up but it's not peat forward. It's not smoky.

Sean still gets his grassiness.

Kyle doesn't get a whole lot.

Scott brings up a decent mouthfeel, a bit thin. A bit sour. But the sweet notes are forefront here.

Simon agrees. He gets honey and malty cereal forward. Nice little heat to it.

We agree it's well rounded. Nothing unique but a decent balance.

We read the back of the bottle and it's throwing flavors around like this is a 30 year old $500 bottle. We're pretty outraged. We read about tropical aromas, ctirus, brown sugar, walnut, coffee, salted bananas, licorice, smoke. All sorts of things that are non-existent in this bottle.

Simon can get a little licorice. Kyle sort of sees where they're coming from with walnut. Scott can see brown sugar. There's a hint of salt there. But overall this is a farfetched marketing ploy.

Reviews: Kyle's pick so he starts us off. This is straightforward for him. Not a ton going on for his palate. He liked the last Jura we reviewed better. It's not terrible, just overall too plain for him to get particularly excited. He goes 60. Scott goes 70. Nothing not to like about this, but it doesn't stand out. It's generically good. Simple, sweet, standard flavors. Well balanced. Trevor doesn't have much to add, lands on a 65. Simon thinks this is well done actually. He thinks the balance and the medium sweet musty malty spicy body is well integrated and delivers a solid, although generic, experience. He thinks it's better than most $60-$80 bottles we've reviewed so far. He ends up on 74. Sean rounds us up. He enjoyed the nose but the palate fell a little falt for him. Overall a generically good scotch, lands on 69. Averages out to 67.6.

Overall: Not a great showing from Jura yet again, but we all agree this is a well-rounded decent scotch. Might make a decent gift to someone who's preferences are unknown. Overall we don't think you're missing out on much here if you haven't had this. Our expectation for a $75 bottle is a flat 70 rating, so it's almost fair value. That said, it's unlikely you'll see it on any of us' shelves.

Cheers!
