Lagavulin 16

Time makes or breaks classics. The longer you've been appreciated the more classical you become. Classics can get boring for the enthusiast who wants to dig into the nitty gritty, but they still serve as standard and a reference point. Today we're digging into a classic that's been around longer than our memories have spanned: Lagavulin 16.

We sniff around

So potent.

Salty, smoky, earthy, meaty. Rich and dark.

After the nose gets adapted there's a little sweetness that comes in. Apples maybe. Sean calls it salted caramel. You gotta look for it.

We cheers

It follows through on the palate. Oily and rich. Peat smoke, bonfire. Ocean salt. Some of us find a hint of citrus.

It's meaty too, like a smoked, salted, meat.

Again, that hint of sweetness in the background, still apple-ish.

Some of us get a little tobacco on the finish. A little heat.

Ratings: We all love this. What more is there to say. Scott gives out his first 90. Sean as well at 92. Simon goes 86, as much as he loves this, the Uigeadail and some of the old Laphroaigs have small notches on this. Trevor goes 90. We average out at 89.5.

Overall: Similar to the Uigeadail recently reviewed, we don't recommend that you start here, it's too potent, but this is a must stop landmark on your whisky journey. This is our highest rated OB in the sub 50% ABV and it's likely to stay that way. Value wise, this does go for $145 here in Ontario, so it fall above average on our value chart, but not by a whole lot. There's no doubt we'll have it on our shelves again.

Cheers!
