Laphroaig 21 Year Old (cask 14020) – Old Particular (Douglas Laing)

Writer's picture: S&PS&P

And here we go, the one I've been most eager for since I signed up for this Douglas Laing tasting. Without further ado, ladies and gentlmen...

Laphroaig 21 yo, 59.9% ABV, aged in refill sherry butt (like most scotches in this tasting), $678 CAD.

Sniffing around.

Morning sea air, bonfire smoke, burnt jam, red wine, smoked bacon, fish market, moldy bread, charcutrie plate, musty nuts, very specific nuts, like musty hazelnuts and pecans. I'm pulling all of these from the sample bottle, when I pour it, it gets a little shy. Maybe because I'm working with so few mLs. In the glass it develops this elegant smokiness, smoked salmon with a honey glaze, but yea shy. With time the oloroso sweetness pops a bit and this mossy musty note. A lot more fragrant and fun in the sample bottle though.

Alright, cheers :)

Mmm, this is so elegant. beautiful mix of oloroso and this really elegant smoke. Like someone smoked an Oliva Melanio in the room an hour ago. There's this backgrounded fishy morning sea air too. Almost no heat. It's such a great thick mouthfeel, which contributes to this ''elegant-ness'' I keep bringing up. The refill cask is perfect for this. This is not your punch in the face Triple Wood or Quarter Cask. This is smooth elegant thick sophisticated, all perfectly balanced medium flavors, velvety, soft, seductive Laphroaig. This is like a mature Uigeadail that got their act together and is now a successful high class gold digger, hanging out in mansions and fancy ballrooms. This tastes like money. It's got a light saltiness and seaside dampness on the finish. This is what millionaires drink. No wonder it sold out so fast.

Review: this is a tasty froggy. I've been fantasizing for a few weeks now that this would be 100/100 review, but as delicious as this is, I still think my perfect score Laphroaig is out there waiting for me. That said, if I had $600 to blow on a bottle, I don't think I'd look much further than this. Stamping a 93 on this.

Cheers!
