We took down a big old shed today. Did it big bad wolf style. Started sawing the roof and it was so shaky we figured we'd just blow on it and sure enough the thing came crashing down.
Got this done a lot faster than we planned, so there you go, we're sitting here mid afternoon, autumn day, enjoying some Laphroaig Quarter Cask.
We sniff around.
Smoky salty. Scott points to some seaweed.
Trevor calls it salted meat stick.
We can pull a hint of something sweet. We want to call it maple syrup.
It's hard to dial into the aromas a lot more than that.
This is recognizably a Laphroaig nose.
We cheers.
Soooo much nicer on the palate.
Complex. Simon points to the peaty musty finish.
Moldy finish.
Explosion of flavors we need to go back to gather our taste buds.
Decent amount of heat.
There's a little burnt taste to it.
Simon says there a kind of rotten apple sweetness to it. Scott calls it a sweet and bitter taste.
Kyle tastes a little tobacco. We don't follow along.
It's salty. Nice balance of heat, salt, and peat.
There's kind of a menthos thing going on as well. Sweet spearmint. Gotta dig for it.
Let's get to ratings: Trevor's a little sadomasochist, he likes getting punched out. He goes 84. Simon's going for 84 as well. This is packed with flavors, and he's got a penchant for Laphroaigs. Scott and Kyle like it, but Laphroaig isn't quite Scott's cup of scotch, and Kyle's feeling a little bruised here. They go 72 and 74 respectively. We average out to 78.5 on this one.
Overall, this is a good value bottle. If you've never had Laphroaig before we recommend you start with the 10, and if you like the 10 we recommend you give the Quarter Cask a shot and see which one you prefer. The 10 is roughly a more tame version of the Quarter Cask, although there's some peripheral differences as well. They both rate similarly in our books.
For context our average review is 72.7 and scotches that rank around the average are Talisker 10 (72.6), Glenmorangie Lasanta (73.3), and Glenfiddich 14 (71.6).
Cheers!
