Macallan 12 Double Cask

It's the time of the wasps. Their prey has by now either been exterminated or done their time, and so they're coming for us. My technique is the ole downward smack and stomp. Fairly reliable. I mean things are reliable until they aren't right.

But we don't bother with the wasps, we've got the honey right here, in this glass of Macallan 12 Double Cask.

The aromas are nice by everyone's standards. Not too complex. Butterscotch clearly stands out, and then there's something else. Simon calls it lemon because it's a citrus kind of sour. Kyle and Scott aren't sure about that, but they recognize there's something else there.

We cheers.

Spicy honey. Mild medium spice, warming. Scott likes that the sweetness hits first, he typically has to sit back and wait.

It's pretty thin.

Simon gets ginger that comes out halfway, a kind of sour spicy.

Oaky and warming finish.

Simon expected something bland, but this is flavorful. A little tart, a little sweet, warming, nicely balanced, complex enough to be engaging but not overly so.

Macallan's are often gifted and it's easy to see why. The bottle looks like a gift. But more importantly this is a crowd pleaser. At C$100 it's expensive enough that eyebrows are raised when they see it, but not so much that it breaks the bank.

Let's get to ratings.

Sean starts us off with a 74. Nice balance, he really enjoys it. Simon likes that this is first time ginger sticks out, and the oak finish. He goes 72. Scott seconds him at 70. Kyle enjoys the honey and considers a bottle for his collection, so he goes a little higher at 76. We average out at a 73 tonight.

Cheers!
